At 4k resolution, a 30-40 inch monitor gives noticeably improved text quality (even when I could only get it at 30hz). Part of the reason for this is that we're looking at the screen from 2.5-3 feet away, rather than the ~6ft viewing distance that is common for TVs. It's hard to describe the difference, except that I have two monitors side by side -- one a 4k, and one a 1440p, and the difference is noticeable. Even when I scale the 4k monitor so that the window size is the same, the text quality is still noticeably easier to read.
