I use Kdenlive and it uses proxy files. Final Cut also uses the same technique, then when you render the final file it substitutes proxy files with actual raw files. How would you handle uploading gigabytes of stuff, though..? Cameras are so good nowadays that even a 10-minute video can weight 2GB.
