I can totally understand this, and it seems that a lot of the blog posts that make it to the top of HN are in some way self promoting the writer's work (be it music, IT consulting, their web-product, their music, etc). I guess it is a hard balance to strike between self-promotion and good content. Perhaps if the writer could be more open about the promotion stuff in the beginning of the article it wouldn't feel insincere.
