Isn't AI vs ML mostly a matter of branding, the latter being a subset of the former? I thought that researchers rallied behind the ML moniker to get funding at a time when the AI winter meant you couldn't get money to do "AI" research. ML ended up encompassing the AI topics that were hot during that time frame.
