All ideas begin life as analogies, which are gradually refined by detailing what precisely is analogous to what, what the exceptions are, etc.

The process of thinking has no strict rules. Anything goes. Even random search. All the requirements for consistency and good form of argumentation apply only to the "final product". When you finally present your new result it should be as solid as possible.
