There is a very big difference between blocking the public (both consumers and business) from dealing with companies from someplace, and blocking companies from that place from getting access to critical infrastructure.
Especially if said company is controlled by its government.
Especially if said company has been caught using said kind of access to spy for its owner government before.
Especially if said country has made a reputation of systematically stealing all the tech and spying any way it could on you to use it "against" you.
Especially if said country is not part of the same geopolitical block as you.
Especially if said government does the same thing to your own companies in the same field.
Confusing regular commercial dealing and critical infrastructure deal and acting like they have the same security need or that one leads to another makes no sense to me, so your comment is, in my opinion, out of line.
- paraditedc 8y agoMaybe TikTok is a better example, given its ability to influence public opinions.
- mtw 8y agoI would love to see a page demonstrating specific vulnerabilities or data theft by Huawei. So far, in comments, it's always "oh they must be doing it", "Oh I've heard about them doing X and Y" or other similar unsubstantiated claims
- aDfbrtVt 8y agoTheir current long-haul optical portfolio exist because they stole the IP from Nortel (as in bugged the building and stole the source code).
- prolikewh0a 8y agoThere's one example, the Nortel IP theft. I'm surprised it wasn't the first comment like every story on Huawei. The world trusts devices that come out of USA even though there is hard evidence of the NSA physically rooting devices with their own malware, but wont trust Huawei. This is entirely trade propaganda at the behest of large cellular RF equipment manufacturers, and device manufacturers.
- snowwindwaves 8y agoIn addition to destroying Nortel and the pensions of everyone who spent their careers there Huawei set up the IT infrastructure of the African Union building built by China and were caught exfiltrating all of the data from the servers to china every night. https://www.aspistrategist.org.au/the-african-union-headquarters-hack-and-australias-5g-network/ https://www.aspistrategist.org.au/the-african-union-headquar...
