Part of the problem is that capitalism seems to require perpetual growth. The "economy" is only "good" when things are growing and expanding, which means more people, more consumption. We need a way to maintain equilibrium.
The concept of Steady-state Economy is rather interesting to me, though it seems the topic doesn't get much attention.

- lotsofpulp 8y agoYou can't aim for steady state when you've priced in 8% annual growth for the next 30 to 60 years by borrowing from the future.
