USB-C audio wouldn't suck if:
a) there was a standard protocol for a USB-C DAC that everyone supported (across desktop and mobile OSes) such that an end consumer could purchase a USB-C DAC and be reasonably confident that it'll work universally,
b) phones came with more than one USB-C port, such that playing and charging at the same time wouldn't be an issue
If anything, USB-C should've been a revolution, pushing the DAC closer to the speakers can help improve audio quality and getting rid of the DAC in the phone helps to level the playing field between devices. But the OEMs dropped the ball hard.
