The biggest problem is that the Web doesn't fit GUI's well. MVC and its variants are an ugly fudge, largely to make the stateless Web protocols "seem" stateful. One has to split the work up into bigger teams to do something that was easy, trivial, one-man-band work in things like Powerbulder, Delphi, Oracle Forms, etc. We devolved from the 1990's, turning bicycle science into rocket science. Our Oracle Forms team is 4x more productive than our MVC team. It's embarrassing. Sure, the web apps are arguably "prettier", but at a cost. (If not for Java security going bad, our org would keep using Forms. Oracle should have kept the "EXE" based client.)
