calling an opinion "100% correct" seems 100% indefensible
- carbocation 8y agoSince this implies that you find this action more than 0% defensible, I'm curious to hear your defense of it.
- dqpb 8y agoHere is a simple argument - if you can prevent disease, you should.
- carbocation 8y ago"Can prevent disease" implies that you are not doing experimentation. If you're doing experiments, it means you don't know if you can.
- chr1 8y agoYou can prevent disease if you make experiments and learn how to prevent it. So in this case experimentation is a first step in preventing disease.
- carbocation 8y agoIn what ethical framework is experimenting on humans the first step? (The answer is none.)
- throwa789 8y agoEthical frameworks are optional, humans sacrifice other humans to acquire power and knowledge regularly, that's the nature of the world
- DennisAleynikov 8y ago"an experiment on human beings [is] not morally or ethically defensible" is not an opinion but an assertion of how genetic editing fits into our current moral and ethical frameworks.
- elcomet 8y agoBut it is an opinion. Being an assertion doesn't prevent it from being an opinion. You and I could very well find arguments for defending it, even while fitting the current morale.
- carbocation 8y agoThe semantic argument about how I phrased my agreement is more worthy of discussion than the ethical argument about the alleged human experimentation?
- paganel 8y agoI think some people are trying to rationalize this way too much, that's why they end up going after semantics and such.
- logicchains 8y ago>our current moral and ethical frameworks. Clearly those moral and ethical frameworks are not shared by at least one Chinese scientist.
- carbocation 8y agoAnd we can find people who disagree with the broad consensus on climate change, too. Is there a broader point you are getting at?
- jpgvm 8y agoFacts are not opinion. Morals and ethics however definitely are. You can show with empirical evidence that climate change is true. However no matter how hard you try you can't show with evidence that your moral framework or ethics are somehow the "one true moral/ethical truth".
