tldr; Thanksgiving was traditionally celebrated in the north, with "northern" food, and after it was made a national holiday by Lincoln the confederate states refused to acknowledge it.
I'm curious about Native Americans though. A lot of their culture and resistance has been lost today, but back around the birth of the holiday I can imagine them finding it offensive and being vocal about it, if not due to politics and tradition, due to the hypocrisy of it.
- jt2190 8y agoSmithsonian magazine has a number of articles that try to bring more balance to the history. Everyone's history matters: The Wampanoag Indian Thanksgiving story deserves to be known https://www.smithsonianmag.com/blogs/national-museum-american-indian/2017/11/23/everyones-history-matters-and-wampanoag-indian-thanksgiving-story-deserves-be-known/ https://www.smithsonianmag.com/blogs/national-museum-america...
- geggam 8y agoNative Americans are still one of the most ignored groups, I think they quit being vocal due to the fact it's a lost cause.

- faitswulff 8y agoI'm just saying that Native Americans are still around and still vocal. Native Americans are still politically active and the first Native American women were even voted into office this year: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Native_Americans_in_the_United_States_Congress#Members-Elect_of_the_House_of_Representatives https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Native_Americans_in_th...
- geggam 8y agoAs part Meskwaki and living in AZ next to several reservations I am aware. Still a lost cause
- stevenwoo 8y agoUm, not yet. The Cherokee are claiming half of Oklahoma https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/11/.../576238/ https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/11/.../576238... The Sioux have refused to accept what has turned into about a billion dollar fee offered by the US federal government in exchange for the Black Hills of South Dakota and since the Sioux have not accepted it, the tribe claim that they still own it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Hills_Land_Claim https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Hills_Land_Claim
- geggam 8y agoConsidering the trillions of dollars in land stolen from them I wouldnt call this any sort of compensation

- dbcurtis 8y agoRealise that Thanksgiving as we have mythologized it today is entirely synthetic. There are only one or two sentences about it on the Pilgrim history, and those are sparse on facts. The traditional menu is one that happened to be served one year at Harvard. For some reason lost to history, it became the de facto traditional menu.
- vinay427 8y agoThe menu differs so much by region, culture, and family that at this point it's honestly hard to describe any as a "de facto traditional menu."
