You’d need to live more than an hour out of the city or in a city with terrible schools to find a house that cheap. Lots of people are optimizing for more than just price. Things like quality of education and commute also factor in. So please realize housing is incredibly complex before judging everyone else as irrational for not making the same life choices as you.
