Yes, that's where tramp comes in, although s3 might need a separate plugin.
For me the best part of dired is "do-what-i-mean" mode, dired-dwim. You basically get the output of `ls -la` and edit it as a text file. When you save, dired figures out changed names/permission bits/etc and does what you mean to those files.
