There are in my opinion some benefits 1. There are a large number of people who are wanting to help you without anything in return - so for a startup where resources are already scarce its actually a good thing 2. Most of the "review my startup" posts come before the app/service has formally launched so it kind of works like a private launch for people 3. In the process of asking someone to review your startup. You'll get in touch with people who turn out be good sources for advice etc 4. Criticism is not in my opinion directed at someone's efforts but rather at the end product which is what the person posting asked for 5. Last thing - any marketing good or bad is better than no marketing
