I think in tech it is hard to see how the product you build is going to be used sometimes. If I work on something in AWS say EMR which enables the "evil corp" to analyze data and influence election outcome. But the same platform can be used by CERN to further their research work. OTOH if I work for Shell or Dow I am pretty clear who I am working for.
