If someone pours gasoline over everything, but someone else lights the match, why do we put all the blame on the match lighter? Building flammable homes right next to super dry, brush filled forests is just an invitation for disaster.
- briffle 8y agoAnd not even the homes, but the defensible perimeters around homes, and especially around the apparently only 3 roads out of Paradise, CA.
- ip26 8y agowhy do we put all the blame on the match lighter? Because we know how to effectively employ "scapegoating" to hide our own misdeeds.
- harikb 8y agoIf no homes were destroyed and people didn't die, there is nobody at fault?
- closeparen 8y agoBecause homeowners wanting an idyllic, natural respite from the big bad city are such sympathetic characters in our culture.
- masonic 8y agoRisks extend to pricey areas as well. Look at aerial views above the Oakland Hills before and after the 1991 fire. Roads choked with illegally parked cars, badly overgrown brush, etc. Almost 3,300 home's destroyed. Look at the same streets now on a typical Fall day: the exact same risk factors in similar proportions. A similar fire now would kill twice as many.
