Another important aspect of Gartner is that it provides a common language and common abstractions for the reality of managing organisations. Concepts like magic quadrants, et al, are not exactly correlated with the reality, but the correlation is strong enough and simple enough that if both you and a vendor are aiming for the same abstract goal, you have a decent chance of ending up in the same real ballpark with minimal effort. That said, there are a million different conceptual frameworks out there and Gartner only specialise in a handful.
