- themodelplumber 8y agoThis is why people like Stallman warn about the cloud, at the extreme end of things. But usually these services offer a way to back up your data, at the very latest close to whenever it is time to finally close up shop. :-) I personally use Pastebin.com a lot and have a lifetime account there, but any information that's really important I immediately back up. For me it's important that if I can't make backups or export the data, at least it's in e.g. plain text so I can get my data out without losing anything. I have gone back to using LibreOffice quite a bit, too, in lieu of cloud word processors. I use the cloud stuff when I'm not working on mission-critical data. Essentially, the more nuanced you can be about what you'll post where, the better your results will be. If you have to pick the One True Software, you're screwed one way or the other.
- wilbertliu 8y agoIf you find there’s a price tag in any service that you want to use, pay for it! Also, share what you’re doing to other people and encourage them to do the same. Of course if you’re the only one that pays, that wouldn’t be meaningful. But if it becomes the culture, then it would be another story.
- eps 8y agoYou obviously can't ensure that his service is around in years from now. So your comment reads like a passive-aggresive way of saying that "you are a small guy, I don't think you'll be around for long, so it is essentially useless." Which is a valid point, it just needs not be veiled behind a rhetorical question.
- omnimus 8y agoOMG. It's not passive agressive. To me it seemed like it is genuine question and comment author hoped somebody has solution.
- h0p3 8y agoThis is one of the reasons I adore Tiddlywiki (https://tiddlywiki.com/ https://tiddlywiki.com/). It's designed to be self-hosted.
- aminmemon 8y agoThis is exactly the reason why I fear to use many new services these days, setting up and putting in all the efforts and time to get started and after a few months the service is discontinued. I have seen a lot of product links going 404 or blank pages on product hunt.
