I wouldn't say it's the fairest thing we know, but it scales the best. A centralized market system could be extremely fair, if there's only 7 participants. With 7 billion, there's just no way. At a national or global level, we need decentralization. At smaller scales, we do use other systems. Within a company, essentially nobody uses a free market system.
