I'm an east coaster that moved to the west coast for 8 years as an adult - and I have a large number of friends who have moved to the bay area from the east coast. As in, I could literally name fifty of them. Is it expensive? Sure. But it's still pretty easy to move if you don't have a family tying you down. Moving anywhere is a pain, but people do it.
