I'm a long time Firefox user and I haven't noticed a difference in battery usage. I have a MacBook Pro and I've got other things that drain my battery of course, like the Scala or Haskell compilers :-) That said Mozilla is apparently working on it and to improve energy efficiency, try setting gfx.compositor.glcontext.opaque to true in about:config.
