Microsoft PDC 10 Live Stream
- deleted 16y ago[deleted]
- rbanffy 16y agoRequires Silverlight... Why would someone trying to promote something prevent access by demanding a plugin install?
- darrenkopp 16y agowhy does apple require quicktime to view their stream? why does adobe require flash to view the stream? because silverlight is a fast, simple install and it's made by microsoft.
- rbanffy 16y agoI don't know. There is no Quicktime for Linux, but, still, Apple's sites open flawlessly most of the time.
- luffy 16y agoIf you don't have Silverlight installed or have no desire to install it, I hate to say it, but: this keynote probably isn't in your wheelhouse. That not withstanding, the quality of Silverlight streaming video is actually quite good.
- cryptoz 16y agoThe problem is that non-Microsoft products can't watch this. So if Microsoft is interested in attracting Linux devs to see how cool their stuff is, they should show the video in a format that isn't restricted to their own platform.
- vyrotek 16y agoI was under the impression that there was a Silverlight client for Linux.
- rbanffy 16y agoThere is, but requiring it to show a video stream is like requiring Java to show an animated GIF...
- points 16y agoThey probably realize that linux/osx devs will look at their stuff and laugh out loud at its lameness.
- vinutheraj 16y agohttp://www.mono-project.com/Moonlight http://www.mono-project.com/Moonlight
- clark-kent 16y agoThe few important Silverlight videos on the web like Netflix and MS videos don't work on Moonlight.
- tvon 16y agoIt works in OSX fine, though I get your point. Honestly though, I don't think Microsoft is too interested in attracting Linux devs.
- rbanffy 16y agoIn their shoes I would be desperate to do so.
- tvon 16y agoWhy? Linux devs have already chosen, and when compared to the potential Windows developer pool they are fairly insignificant in number, so why devote resources to changing their minds when you could devote resources to convincing current Windows users to stay with Windows?
- clark-kent 16y agoAnd Moonlight can't play it.
- nailer 16y agoWarning: link immediately launches Silverlight which may make your browser unresponsive as it did mine. Flagged (since would have been polite to mention this in the topic).
- vyrotek 16y agoSeriously? Flagged because your machine can't handle silverlight? Perhaps everyone should also comment that a link to youtube uses Flash and it may also slow down your system.
- nailer 16y agoMany people asides from myself use OS X. The Mac version of Silverlight is known to be of far less quality than the Windows version, and Moonlight on Linux is known to be considerably worse than that. Flash performs much better than Silverlight on both the aforementioned platforms. However if Flash did have the same issues as Silverlight did, then yes I would expect a warning. Edit: I stand corrected - apparently Moonlight can't even play the video at all. :^)
- ugh 16y agoIt says “Live Stream” right there in the title. What did you expect? This is one of those few cases where autoplay is entirely appropriate.
- nailer 16y agoA live stream in a common web format, either Flash or HTML5.
- rbanffy 16y agoMaybe they use Silverlight in order for it to work under IE6...
- jamaicahest 16y agohttp://riastats.com http://riastats.com lists Silverlight at 64% in the past 30 days, seems common enough for me. It's a Microsoft conference for Microsoft developers, seems reasonable to use a Microsoft video player.

- vyrotek 16y agoAs a Windows Azure customer who has been a bit frustrated lately, I am actually excited to see how much progress they have made. It seems there are a huge number of features that are going to be released this year. Remote Desktop access is HUGE. Also the Role management system updates look great. My faith in Azure has been renewed :) Edit - Apparently I'm not allowed to be excited about a microsoft product? Well let me just get this out there then. I love C#, ASP.Net MVC and Windows 7.
- sriramk 16y agoHappy you like. Ping me offline (sriramk [at] microsoft.com] if you'd like any help with anything. Apart from the features, I'm happy about the fact we got to talk about Pixar's Renderman on Azure. I was so excited when I first heard about it and couldn't wait to talk about it.
- bsk 16y agoText totally unreadable. Should've used justin, ustream or livestream :D EDIT: 10 hour keynote?
