It is a bit of a rant, yes; I did write it to evoke emotion; and it is less clear than it could be. > what is the connection between "Beautiful code gets rewritten" and "Refuse to work on systems that profit from digital addictions." ? Both result from systematic perverse incentives caused by local rather than global optimisation processes. That's part of what I was trying to get at in part II. We really aren't very good at making collective decisions yet; neither narrow ones about how to build software, nor broader ones about what software to build. I don't have a solution, but in the meantime I'd like to try not to make things worse.
