I used to use the Firefox extension Scrapbook. It saved items to a local archive (not "local storage", but user-definable and in the normal local filesystem). Then the Firefox rewrite killed it. In addition to news that I'd like to be able to refer back to, I've found more and more "perennial" Web resources disappearing. The Web is not a library. If I want to be sure I am able to refer to something more than a week or a month later, I'm finding I need to ensure I have a local copy. Scrapbook made this easy and convenient.
