"Fire and Ice" is also quite misread and well recognized.
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
- the_af 8y agoIn what sense is "Fire and Ice" misread? Does it not say "desire (fire) is the most powerful and potentially destructive passion, but hate (ice) is not far behind?". Disclaimer: never read any analysis about the poem, that's just my take.
- bryanrasmussen 8y agoit is also somewhat ironically meant I think: From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire by saying he holds with those who favor fire, he says in fact that he favors desire, which he has experienced in the past. He would like the world to end in desire. So he subtly changes the question from how do you think the world will end to how do you want it to end. But then being Frost, and somewhat ambiguous, he changes it back, deciding that hate will also suffice (to destroy the world). I mean obviously it is just very playful.
