I mean, that seems like a stretch. I agree that most drug advertising (including alcohol) should be limited and never targeted towards children, but IDK how you can limit a financial interest to not increase consumption. Even if you allow home production, there's going to be bong companies and vaporizer manufacturers that want more people buying their products.
Legalize weed, don't market it towards children, let adults do what they want if they're not harming themselves. Substance abuse problems (which are entirely different from the issues surrounding smoking, which wasn't "cool" but just "the thing that literally everyone does" prior to advertising) are mental health issues more so than access to a substance issue. People become alcoholics because they're genetically inclined towards the it or because they are trying to escape something about their circumstances (or frequently both).
TL;dr- Plenty of people already smoke weed, and nobody advocating legalization is advocating for people to be allowed to drive stoned or let children buy pot.
- simion314 8y agoIt is also a social thing, young people smoke not because it is a mental issue but because it is cool, their freiends smoke so they try it. If the movies, music will show that is cool and the risk of smoking pot is small then getting the truth out-there will be expensive. Some rich business makes tons of money and the society needs to pay for studies, education, health treatments.
- moate 8y agoWeed is closer to alcohol in this regard. People smoke cigarettes because it looks cool. People drink or smoke pot because they're mind altering substances. Movies/music/etc. already portray smoking pot (whether it's cool or not is up to you I guess) so that horse is out of the barn. "Will Kids think it's cool" isn't really a good argument in favor of prohibition. If anything, so far the (small amount) of data seems to show that legalization doesn't really impact things too much in regards to kids smoking in states its been legalized in. The teen usage is about the same, but it's still a super new thing so who knows how that plays out long term.
- simion314 8y agoI am not arguing for prohibition but for making sure that the financial interests won't go wild, I read daily here the phrase "companies have no moral" so I see this companies putting a lot of effort into selling as much as possible by advertising, misleading people about the side effects, a solution that I would be happy would be to not allow big companies to enter into this business, allow only small farmers, if it is imported then it should be done by non-profits and distribute it in pharmacies. I admit I did not studied this topics since I am not interested just I am very disgusted on the tabacoo industry advertising and lobby and I would like to not repeat the history. I am not for prohibition, make it legal but don't have that a dozens of people get rich on this and society pays for the consequences.
