I didn't mean to be flippant. But 12 year olds are not as "incompetent" as you might think, or at least not much more than say a 21 year old. Just explain them the basic dangers that they need to look out for, and then they will learn on their own.

Certainly not incompetent. Just lacking knowledge and experience. Yes I agree with explaining to them the dangers to a point. I just feel that its something where "danger" is introduced with no need. When I teach my son to ride a bike it will probably be in the park because I don't also want to explain to him the dangers of riding on the road.
