You don't even need a fountain pen, which even as a fountain pen user I will admit can be fiddly sometimes (doesn't write on certain paper, can be messy, requires constant refilling). A half decent gel pen will work almost as well, combining the best parts of a fountain pen with the best parts of a ballpoint. I can write for hours with a fountain pen or a gel pen, but I really struggle with those $1 Biro pens.
