cable tv without broadcast... does that combination exist anywhere?
- mark-r 8y agoWhen cable TV was new, that was its entire reason for existing. Not sure about the present landscape but I'm sure it happens somewhere.
- reaperducer 8y agoActually cable's origin was to bring broadcast television to areas with poor or no reception. Cable systems were often started by neighborhood groups and local small businesses, which is why "cable" is sometimes called "CATV" — Community Access Television. Later, satellite-carried "Superstations" were added like WPIX, WTBS, WGN, etc... Later still, pay television services like HBO and Cinemax were added. Even later, we ended up with what we have today.
- astura 8y agoYes... Cable is widely available here, yet I live too far away from any broadcast stations to pick them up.
- dpeck 8y agothanks sibling responders, I learned something new. I grew up in rural southeast US and I've always associated cable with cities/suburbs and had broadcast/satellite (old giant ones most until middle school).
