I think it's funny that the Q in QUIC stands for Quick. Naming things is hard.
- Cyph0n 8y agoThat reminds of me recursive acronyms[0]. Some examples: * GNU: GNU's Not Unix * cURL: Curl URL Request Library * WINE: WINE Is Not an Emulator [0]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recursive_acronym https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recursive_acronym
- tech2 8y agoOne of my all time favourites was Xinu (Xinu is not Unix), much more so than the doubly-weird Hurd.
- SEJeff 8y agoGNOME - "GNU's Not Unix" Network Object Modelling Environment!
- diydsp 8y agoFrom the old days when it ran on slow hardware: Emacs Makes A Computer Slow
- teddyh 8y agoNo, that’s a joke. The ones you commented on are all the official definitions.
- simias 8y agoRecursive acronyms are a staple of hacker culture by now. There's of course GNU (and many GNU projects) but also PHP, PINE and many backronyms like XBMC: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recursive_acronym https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recursive_acronym
- maxmcd 8y agoYou mean "Personal Home Page"? :)
- isostatic 8y agoRecursive acronyms often get redefined down the line
- jsjohnst 8y agoPHP was originally “Personal Home Page”. It wasn’t until version 3 that it became a recursive acronym in an attempt to legitimize it for more than personal projects.
- isostatic 8y agoPHP hypertext preprocessor I believe? PHP3 was the first "real" version of PHP, it came out in 97, and wasn't called personal home page tools then. O'Reilly didn't have a PHP book until 99 if I remember rightly.
- johnhenry 8y agoNot technically recursive because the "Q" does not stand for "QUIC".
- zamalek 8y agoIt does, if you get rid of the redundant K, but I don't think they were thinking that deeply about it when they arrived at QUIC. It's an attempted recursive acronym.
- trumped 8y ago> QUIC, Quick UDP Internet Connections looks like they forced the Internet word in there to make it work...
