MVC, functional programming, high-order functions, hoisting... hard concepts to grasp if your background is in HTML, CSS and basic interactive JavaScript. Well that's the difference between a frontend developer and a designer... I don't think fronted dev has changed that much. frameworks have, but the core of the role is the same: understanding/organize ui states, understanding threading models, events, interact with backend apis, know some design, etc.
