Democrats have been complaining about this for decades, but what did they do when they got majorities in 2008? Absolutely nothing.
Like a lot of other things, I feel like Democrats like to keep these issues around as a rallying cause, instead of fixing them.
Edit: I'll just address some of the comments here. This is not "partisan sniping", and I write this as a former Obama volunteer and a lifelong Democrat.
Second: the federal government can do something. Here's an idea: give a $100M grant to 5 major universities to develop an open-source (hardware and software) alternative to the current system, and make a FIPS standard out of it. Then, certify vendors who implement that standard. The states can then buy systems from those vendors.
- creaghpatr 8y agoVox is just trying to delegitimize the election ahead of a potential loss. They did the same thing for the Supreme Court. Textbook fearmongering.

- code_duck 8y agoIs that your response to the gigantic list of legitimate concerns about our Swiss-cheese election system... it’s all a conspiracy by the media?

- narinek 8y agoIf they win they won't complain but if they lose they'll say the election was hacked because of the machines. He's not delegitimising the concerns about the machines, which are evident. He's delegitimising the way journalists are bitching about it. (I don't follow the American election so I don't know who will win.)
- creaghpatr 8y agoCorrect, and we saw exactly this happen in 2016, to such an extent that Barrack Obama had to make a public statement “It’s not rigged” in response to conspiracy theorists claiming that entities would exploit vulnerabilities in the voting infrastructure. It’s uncomfortable for some to confront this.
- code_duck 8y agoI disagree that writing articles is ‘journalists bitching’, and I’m disappointed and even shocked that people are dense enough to have that perception or attitude.
- scrollaway 8y agoOr, or, or… get this: You guys have a lot of problems in your election system. (And you really frickin do.) That Vox is bringing it up now may be a partisan play, or maybe it's not. That doesn't matter, it only should influence your view on Vox itself, not the subject at hand.
- _red 8y agoFurther the article never mentions: ID, illegals, undocumented Complaining about fraud via electronic voting machines and ignoring the 20M+ that are potentially voting illegally is quite curious indeed.
- monocasa 8y agoBecause we've looked into it many times, and it's not a big deal. Trump just silently disbanded the task force looking for undocumented immigrants voting for instance. "I'm undocumented, what am I going to do on a Tuesday? How about skipping work where I already don't get paid a living wage to go to a government building with sone police standing around, and big voter rolls of all citizens in the area. Yeah, that sounds like a great idea."
- burfog 8y agoThe task force couldn't operate because the states most suspected of having this problem would not supply data. One could infer that this means they know they have the problem and are hiding it.
- monocasa 8y agoDid they try to subpoena the information? The Feds have a constitutional right to this information. Or did they just look for the first road block so that they could say "oh we tried to look into it, but we were foiled by those dastardly Democrats"?
- p49k 8y agoElections are run by states, not by the federal government, and the most problematic voting situations in the US are usually where Republicans have control of state legislature.
- madengr 8y agoAnd the dead vote Democrat.
- enraged_camel 8y agoFederal government has very little, of any, control over how states conduct their elections.
- bilbo0s 8y agoGuys, we've had three terrorist attacks this week, and a lot of us are just kind of tired of the partisan sniping. Can we just kind of give it a rest for a little while? It really is a bad time right now.
- stephengillie 8y agoMany of us were tired of the partisan sniping before this week's tragedies. Election season makes the politically-minded think they can endlessly spill toxic discourse across all social and news mediums.
- mikeash 8y agoIf you don’t want to read partisan sniping, don’t come into the comments about election systems. It’s not like this is a story about the attacks where people hijacked the conversation. Don’t seek out a topic and then complain that people are discussing it, that’s just silly.
- pjc50 8y agoThe terror attacks are themselves partisan sniping with live ammunition. This will continue until the right realises that it's better to live in a peaceful country than win at all costs.
- sparkie 8y ago"If only my opponents surrendered, everything would be peaceful" I think the far-left could equally do with some reflection. The far-right is not the only problem in today's politics.
