White males who enlisted in the military were not recipients of privileged treatment by society.
- malcolmgreaves 8y agoYes they are. You don't understand what white privilege is.
- jriot 8y agoSeeing that you grew up in Massachusetts, went to CMU, and now live San Francisco, I can see why you hold that opinion. Come visit me in Louisiana and I will show its a socio-economic issue, not a race issue.

- jriot 8y agoYou're not going to convenience a white southern who enlisted in the military out of high school on the myth of white privilege.
- malcolmgreaves 8y ago*the fact of white privilege
- jriot 8y agoOpinion.
- malcolmgreaves 8y agoSticking your head in the sand because you don't want to see the truth doesn't make it go away.
- jriot 8y agoJust because you live in the echo chamber known as SF, based on pushing identity and race into everything, doesn't make it true.
- malcolmgreaves 8y agoYour privilege is evident in your response here. As a white person, you have the luxury of not thinking about race. That's one of your privileges. If you're a person of color, it's impossible to not think about race all of the time. Also, it's evident that you're not being a genuine conversational partner here: you clearly didn't even read the first sentence of the post I linked earlier. You keep believing that white privilege = someone comes to your door to give you money.
- jriot 8y agoMost people don't think about race, particularly those outside of the coastal cities, excluding the south. There are far more pressing issues than to think about race at every turn or any turn for that matter. If you believe people consume their time thinking about race you are naive. Let's pretend for a second white privilege exists, why would I as white male, give-up something that actually benefits me in this world? Are you going to purposefully make life harder for yourself?
- Chris2048 8y agoHow does that inform your reasoning above? How does being part of a group racially targeted by cops mean you can bring something different to a software development team, outside very specific examples of software?
- malcolmgreaves 8y agoYou, uh, answered your own question in your second sentence. Do you expect me to enumerate all the possible ways? Why don't you think about your life experience has been shaped by your gender and race? Your writing implies that society doesn't treat people differently on their skin complexion and gender. Do you believe that?
- Chris2048 8y ago> Do you believe that? I don't believe that, I also don't believe that "my writing implies that" - dont put words in my mouth, it's aggravating to play that game. > Do you expect me to enumerate all the possible ways? I'm asking specifically what this brings to a software team; just a few good (general) examples will do. I can't see how I answered that; Are you saying the answer is only in "very specific examples of software"? > don't you think about your life experience has been shaped by your gender and race Yes, but nothing to do with my programming contributions
- mantas 8y agoCome to eastern europe and tell more about white privilege...
- malcolmgreaves 8y agohttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18305769 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18305769
- mantas 8y agoHow is that related to eastern europe where 99% of population is white? Of course our politicians are white. And we're not afraid to be murdered by cops because cop violence is next to non existent in there. It'd be interesting to hear how there're "no closed doors" and "every opportunity is available" to nobody since whole population is white. Yeah, right, everybody is white and rich and healthy and has plenty of opportunities :) Especially the older generation that grew up in soviet times and lived through 90s :) Relations with western europe, both on political and personal level, is a wide topic as well... I'm pretty sure average black american is more privileged than average eastern european. So how about black privilege? Or is it just people in different countries and in different socioeconomic status face different issues, regardless of color...
- malcolmgreaves 8y agoI'm not talking about Europe at all. This is an American-centeted conversation thread (on an American website). As an American, I am definitely not going into the culture, society, and politics of another continent. Most European societies are extremely homogenous: racially and culturally. Naturally, those counties' social ails are vastly different from the heterogenous society that is the US. Alsooooo you really didn't get my post at all. The first thing I wrote is that white privilege has a casual relationship with how society treats you. It only incidentally/implcitly affects finances. It's actually humorous that you believe white privilege = someone gives you money.
