Like the one that ran directly into a lane divider at highway speed? Or the one that ran into the side of a semi trailer?
- TomMarius 8y agoMy ACC/lane assist would do the same thing. Autopilot was never intended to be used without looking at the road. People have misconceptions about the word "autopilot" - it has never ever meant full or even partial autonomy, plane autopilots are way less autonomous than a basic ACC in a car is.
- gamblor956 8y agoMy ACC/lane assist would do the same thing. Citation needed. In the history of lane assist, Teslas are the only cars that have actually run into center dividers and killed their drivers while lane assist was engaged, because other automakers are sensible enough to disable lane assist where the lane markings are ambiguous.
- TomMarius 8y agoI drove some 2-door Volvo that almost sent me into a truck that was next to me in the middle of a turn on a highway. Actually it didn't work in any turns (as in did nothing, most of the time). Terrible thing, especially considering that there was absolutely no clear mark anywhere on the dashboard that it's enabled and I was driving 200 km/h (on autobahn in Germany) when the situation with a truck happened. I also never found out how to disable that thing, thankfully I didn't have to drive on the way home. I own a Ford Mondeo (the 2008 high end variant) and it would not disengage when marks on the right side disappear, left is enough - but that is a problem because it'll resist if I try to go to the right (if there is a split) and I guess that a very similar accident to the Tesla one could happen but we have no places like that around here so I can't test. I don't use the system.
- gamblor956 8y agoThe 2008 Ford Mondeo doesn't have lane assist, only lane departure warning, so it wouldn't have done anything other than signal when you start leaving a lane. Ford didn't offer lane assist until the 2010s. I can't comment on the Volvo, since you don't say what model it is.
- TomMarius 8y agoSorry I confused the model year. It's MK4 but after facelift with BLIS system. I don't know what model the Volvo was, something recent from around 2015. It's not my/my family's car.
