In Demo IV it's clear that this is intended to be used without correcting previous output. So with a look-ahead of 3 words it outputs the exact opposite of the intended meaning. For this to be practical, the look ahead probably has to be the whole sentence, defeating the purpose.
The propaganda push in Western media to build up and legitimize Chinese academia and technology ventures is staggering. Check out that map at the bottom. This article is more popular in EU and US than China itself. 99.9% of the chinese economy is built around stolen or borrowed technology. So what would be a minor development by a western researcher is a "breakthrough" for Baidu.

- ramblerouser 8y agoI know you mean well, but please take a look at the Hackernews guidelines linked at the bottom of the page, specifically the following two passages. >Don't be snarky. Comments should get more civil and substantive, not less, as a topic gets more divisive. >Please don't post shallow dismissals, especially of other people's work. A good critical comment teaches us something. These are great guidelines, I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of whoever wrote them.
- withhighprod 8y agoSorry since it’s hate speech in the first place, I couldn’t help
- tareqak 8y agoI don't see where your accusation about this being a Western media issue comes from in this particular case: the link is the project's GitHub repository. Moreover, it makes sense that USA and EU together have more media companies than China does by itself. Finally, this project is about better language translation technology, which is something that can help bridge cultural divides instead of leaving cultures in isolation. I don't know enough about languages to be able to tell if some advance is a major breakthrough or not, but people on Hacker News share and applaud minor improvements in many personal or professional projects, so I don't see why a Chinese project should be held to a different standard on this forum in that regard.
- corey_moncure 8y agoThis is one reason that interpreting between SVO (e.g. English) and SOV (e.g. Japanese) ordered languages can be so fatiguing. You have to constantly buffer the sentence in your working memory while you wait for the completion before you can output a conventional sounding interpretation. It's even worse with drop-heavy languages, where key words are frequently omitted from the sentence and left to contextual assumption.
