- throwaway080383 8y agoI think what GP meant was that MD5 is meant to be cryptographic, and parenthetically, it's bad at it. MeowHash is not even meant to be cryptographic, so it is much faster.

MD5 is around 5 cycles per byte[0] or 0.2 bytes per cycle. Pre-existing fast non-cryptographic hashes apparently top out around 5.5 bytes per cycle (CityHashCRC256). - ynniv 8y agoThank you. The comparison of MeowHash to SHA without mentioning MD5 or any actual performance numbers didn't make sense.
