You want to test for fundamental knowledge of C++, for the practice of using C++ for developing code, but avoid impractical cases that nobody remembers in their right mind. Every interviewer has his own favorite C++ trick. The fact that an interviewee doesn't know or use that trick doesn't mean that his C++ skills are inadequate. It means that the interviewer's trick may not be as commonly used as he may think.
