First off, the "single engineer" was Levandowski, the person who basically started Google's self-driving team and was the lead for the project, not any random person. Second, this was back in 2011, and that was in the early days, "Waymo" wasn't a thing until 2016. This is just a bunch of engineers experimenting, not a real product. Lastly, the person who did this is long gone.

That does not dicount the fact that a single engineer rigged the software in a way which allowed a deadly machine to be used on public roads. If anything it makes the issue much worse that the lead engineer performed such an, arguably, criminal hack. Actually I appreciate your answer. It illustrates perfectly why the SV croud cannot be trusted with policy decisions regarding autonomous vehicles.
- AstralStorm 8y agoBetter ban people from installing anything in their cars. Who knows if that cell phone holder will kill. (Here's where I show you the absurdity of what you're asking for.) Preferably also prevent mechanics from taking apart cars, they make mistakes and install unapproved parts. It is far more dangerous than an actual test drive with an actual safety driver.
