I was wondering what was causing all these 500 Server Error iFrames to show up all over the web. This is exactly why I oppose our current system of copyright laws. There's no legal way to mirror a lot of the really unique, rich content that's on YouTube and, if one day that content creator decides to delete it off YouTube, we might lose large pieces of internet history forever and just flat-out break sites that are embedding that content.
Scary thought...
- kiostech 8y agoThat's why we need IPFS, blockchain and all kind of decentralized system. Watch DTube meanwhile https://d.tube/ https://d.tube/
- narcindin 8y agoThat is why it's so important to never be down. Otherwise when would I have heard of DTube?
- datlife 8y agoI forgot the name but there is a website in Russia that is very similar to Youtube and quite popular as well.
- mitchtbaum 8y agoPeerTube is also worth a mention. They just released 1.0.0. so now's a good time to evaluate it. https://github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube https://github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube
- RoyTyrell 8y agoSo are you saying it's 100% impossible to hvae DTube go down?
- SllX 8y agoSo... about that. If you like a video, you better save it yourself because otherwise it will be gone someday forever. That’s good advice for anything you see on the Internet.
- hprotagonist 8y agoall hail youtube-dl.
- dpkonofa 8y agoI don't have the time nor the money to be a data hoarder, unfortunately. I think there needs to be a bigger collective of people that preserve this type of history. Archive.org is doing a sizable job with the written side of the internet but there's still a long way to go to preserve media.
- SllX 8y agoI too don't have the time or money to be a data hoarder, but if I like something enough that I'm going to want to read or watch it again, and especially if I want to refer it to others or refer back to it as a source, I'll make a copy. Not because I necessarily want my own copy, but because it is the only way to make sure that I'll still have it available for my own use. That said, there's a lot that just isn't worth saving, so I don't actually spend much in the way of time or money saving it.
- dpkonofa 8y agoBut that's exactly the point of my initial post. Downloading a video for myself on YouTube is technically copyright infringement. That's a completely ridiculous concept but it's the state of where the internet is today thanks to corporate lobbyists and politicians that are easy to buy off who don't understand how the technology works in the first place.
- noobermin 8y agoI was also noticing it's not just youtube, a number of other sites are experiencing issues. Some major provider is down?
