Rust/iron in water is considered benign for human consumption AFAIK.
- DoreenMichele 8y agoI don't see where the OP specified iron. First, metals other than iron are generally considered to be poisonous to humans. In fact, aluminum has been linked to Alzheimer's. Second, even too much iron causes metal poisoning.
- newnewpdro 8y ago> dark rust color That's likely iron oxide, but I see nowhere in his post where the water was actually analyzed by a lab to determine its contents. There's simply insufficient data to draw any meaningful conclusions from. It's just worth noting that rusty water isn't necessarily bad for you, and is actually rather common. There's no smoking gun in the observation.
- DoreenMichele 8y agoThis isn't a courtroom. It isn't a murder trial. It's a conversation and I see zero reason to rebut speculation wondering what really happened to someone's late mother, as if they aren't allowed to think out loud and must prove X beyond a shadow of a doubt. Comments of that ilk on HN are something of a personal pet peeve.
- newnewpdro 8y agoThe same thing you're complaining about here equally applies to my casual statment about iron oxide being harmless that you took issue with. This isn't a courtroom Doreen, I'm just thinking out loud, lay off.
- DoreenMichele 8y agoIt also applies equally to my observation that he didn't specify what metal it was and that even iron can be harmful when consumed excessively. That's not a personal attack. It's just factual. Just like your observation that rust, per se, isn't necessarily a reason for concern.
- nate_meurer 8y agoYou responded to newnewpdro by telling them you saw no reason for them to make such a comment, and that comments like that are a pet peeve of yours. The word "attack" might be a bit strong, but your stance is plainly adversarial. You essentially just told newnewpdro to keep their thoughts to themself. FWIW, I didn't read the OP as rebutting anything. I read it as merely an addition -- a BTW if you will -- and an accurate one that is, IMO, a useful little reminder in conversations about metals in drinking water. I found Mc_Big_G's original comment interesting too.
- DoreenMichele 8y agoI said that after they got all dismissive in a follow up comment and doubled down with saying there was no smoking gun. This reads to me like someone asserting their right to post random facts and getting pissed and dismissive when someone else does the same. Before that it was one person listing a general fact followed by another person listing other general facts and somehow that turned into me being told to "lay off". I don't see where it's reasonable to make me out to be the bad guy here.
