WikiLeaks has found that the mainstream press won't cover anything in depth unless they're assured of some exclusivity and advance notice. I don't know for sure, but that's probably the reason for the NDA. WikiLeaks used to just dump information on the world and assume that researchers and journalists would take it from there, but apparently it doesn't work like that.
