Highly recommend Joseph Roth's The Hotel Years too. A series of his newspaper columns filed across Europe between the wars. It's in a roughly chronological order as well, and really captures the darkness and change that spreads across the continent from the 20's through the 30's - with some eerie parallels that can be seen in glimpses today.
