Ah, so wrong default config of qgtkstyle and colors. In kde selecting the gtk theme is very simple via system settings but gnome insists on things like tweak tool instead. You can use qt5ct to set the config. > (I believe the problem only affects apps build against KDE frameworks and not against pure Qt). Not in my experience. It is just that some of the more basic qt apps behave better with missing icons or wrongly configured colors.
