Ask HN: Why does Brave paint so slowly on Android?

I'm using a P20 Pro. It's not the best phone but it's not sluggish either. In Brave browser, even to paint simple web pages, I often see it painting elements only after they've entered the screen. This happens on pages as small as 160KB and less so memory is obviously not the issue. Why does this happen?
