Ask HN: How to stop MacOS apps pre-empting frontmost app?

One of the things I hate about MacOS is that when I'm working with one app, other apps that are running (but are not front-and-center) can pop up windows, notifications, dialog boxes in front of the working app. Is there a setting to disable this? Anyone know?
