In my view there is a certain amount of bragging that is warranted. And that amount depends on the person: his/her "utility" to the people that take the bragging, his/her "objective greatness", his/her willingness to take your own bragging with awe, etc. Terms quoted as they shouldn't be taken in literal meaning.
