- cercatrova 8y agoWhat is the context of this comment? I don't know who Jordan Peterson is or what he's done.
- madeuptempacct 8y agoIn short, Jordan Peterson is a Canadian (iirc) professor who picked the easiest position possible: "SJWs are overly dramatic emos" and got fired for it, so he became a kind of pseudo-intellectual martyr on youtube. Then it gets crazier - he tries to mix religion with atheism, etc. His (usually rabid) fanboys are obsessed with him.
- enraged_camel 8y agoI think this is a pretty accurate summary, as probably evidenced by the downvotes you are getting (and I no doubt will get). :)
- Dirlewanger 8y agoIf that's your takeaway of someone who has decades-long career and has hours upon hours of free lectures available (of which none I'm sure you've watched), then yeah, you're an idiot and you're part of the problem of overreacting to ideas that don't safely reside in your bubble.
- madeuptempacct 8y agoAnd yet you fail to summarize one profound discovery he made.
- 0xf8 8y agoWhat profound discoveries has madeuptempacct made? To qualify as the "arbiter."
- madeuptempacct 8y agoI am not trying to sell you books and lectures.

- badloginagain 8y agoThe 'Canadaland' Podcast, a Canadian media criticism podcast, did a fantastic episode on Petersons media strategy. It basically maps how Dr.(?) Peterson exploits his controversial reputation to sell his books. http://www.canadalandshow.com/podcast/canadaland-guide-jordan-b-peterson/ http://www.canadalandshow.com/podcast/canadaland-guide-jorda... (As a side note, even though its Canada-centric, Canadaland is probably one of best things that has happened to Canadian journalism in a long time. Anyone even remotely interested should give it a listen.)
- mirroredfate 8y agoSort of. He didn't get fired and he is really highly cited and respected within his field. Most of his life advice constitutes a rehash of stoicism.
- theandrewbailey 8y agoHe got fired? That's news to me. He's still on the U of T directory. http://home.psych.utoronto.ca/staff/undergrad.htm http://home.psych.utoronto.ca/staff/undergrad.htm As for his views on SJWs, that's a small part of what he does. He's an evolutionary psychologist. He takes the long view of things, and discovered that some religions got some things right, and that's reflected in the stories we tell each other.
- madeuptempacct 8y ago" Peterson at the University of Toronto in March 2017 In response to the controversy, academic administrators at the University of Toronto sent Peterson two letters of warning, one noting that free speech had to be made in accordance with human rights legislation and the other adding that his refusal to use the preferred personal pronouns of students and faculty upon request could constitute discrimination. Peterson speculated that these warning letters were leading up to formal disciplinary action against him, but in December the university assured him that he would retain his professorship, and in January 2017 he returned to teach his psychology class at the University of Toronto." -Wikipedia Whatever, close enough. "He takes the long view of things" Nonstatement. "and discovered that some religions got some things right" Funny that you brought religion into this - he is a lot like religion, that is - he has a lot of fans, and gets some things right, infrequently.
- dang 8y agoWould you please not do flamewars on HN? Especially not about classic flamewar topics. I realize you didn't introduce it, but you did more than anyone else to wreck this thread. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html Also, personal attacks like https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18133374 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18133374 will get you banned here, so please don't do that again. Also, while I have you: if you post nationalistic slurs like https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18121532 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18121532 again ("shitty country"), we will ban you.

- apineda 8y agoIt was actually about a bill being passed on compelled speech.
- jbob2000 8y agoHe's a pop-psychologist and likes to throw big words around, pseudo intellectuals love him. He bases his ideas off of sketchy social science and if you have even a modicum of exposure to this material, you know he's just a slick talker looking to make a buck.
- dghughes 8y agoThere's a video from the Munk Institute where Jordan Peterson, Stephen Fry and two other people debate whether political correctness is good or bad. https://www.munkdebates.com/The-Debates/Political-Correctness https://www.munkdebates.com/The-Debates/Political-Correctnes...
