The thing you know will always seem simpler than the thing you don't, but I think it's simply a convention versus configuration argument and where you want the abstactions. Personally, I've used both, but many of the traditional stacks are manually configured blobs with abstactions in the wrong place and I'm happy that your average sysadmin no longer needs to build these.
