Today's announcement gives him an escape hatch from being a political lightning rod. He's no Elon. I am amazed the commentary across the web is about Amazon's reasoning and almost no coverage of the patient organizing done by the SEIU and countless others to make $15 the minimum wage. Then again, that silence is arguably a good thing, for it hides the fact that socialist ideas are increasingly mainstream in the heart of capital :)
