Not to mention that we have two cities on this continent that have excellent cultural, geographic, and economic parallels to San Francisco, as well as Oakland, Seattle, Portland, Boston, Vancouver, and plenty of other coastal North American cities. Chicago and Montreal have both done excellent jobs of growing housing in response to economic growth, and their cities are remarkably affordable in comparison.

With the possible exception of Oakland, of which I know little, none of these cities are affordable. Boston and Vancouver, in particular, are among the most expensive cities in North America.
